The face of farming is changing, so I need to change with it if I want to survive
I have learned to always research the market before planting my crops! Trends vary in agriculture, just like they do in any industry. You don’t want to plant something that no one is using and have acres of that product. The other factor that I need to take into account is the import and export fees, along with the taxes and markets. These also vary greatly from year to year. There might be a year that corn is the crop of choice, but the next year you’re looking at the soybean. There is a new crop that has the potential to be lucrative in the next few years to come, this product is marijuana. I know many farmers that have decided to lease their fields to marijuana farmers in hopes of making more money. I’m learning that I need to let go of the traditional farming to make way for this growing industry. Marijuana farming companies are willing to pay good money for fertile farmlands. This will allow them to grow their crops and improve the section by adding greenhouses and irrigation systems. This adds to the value of the property and allow me, the farmer, to have added access to water. Putting in an irrigation system can be a lot of money, but once it is done, the farmer will have it for their own crops in the future. Should a corporation decide that they want to purchase the land, someone like me can make a large profit. The face of farming is changing, so I need to change with it if I want to survive. I need to be open to up-to-date concepts and up-to-date crops.
